Anthropic Sues the U.S. Department of Defense Over Artificial Intelligence

The leading AI startup and legal firm Anthropic has sued the US Department of Defense. Zamin.uz reports this news.
The main reason for this lawsuit is that the Department of Defense deemed the company a risk to its supply chain. The company's management considers the decision unlawful and describes it as an unprecedented tool of pressure.
Recent reports on this matter were published by foreign tech media outlets. The dispute arose because the parties hold differing views on how artificial intelligence should be used for military purposes.
Anthropic has consistently opposed using its technologies for constant population surveillance or controlling autonomous weapons operating without human oversight. In contrast, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth emphasized that the Pentagon should be able to use AI systems for any legal purpose without restrictions.
The "risky" label assigned by the government led to serious economic and organizational consequences for the company. As a result, all contracts between Anthropic and the federal government were terminated.
According to company representatives, the state is using its power to punish an entrepreneur whose views do not align with theirs, which constitutes a constitutional violation. The lawsuit filed in court states that the Department of Defense did not fully comply with established legal procedures when making this decision.
Specifically, no in-depth risk assessment process was conducted, and the company was not given sufficient opportunity to defend itself. Currently, Anthropic is seeking justice through the courts to protect its economic interests and its position on AI safety.
This situation may lead to a reevaluation of relationships between the state and the private sector in the field of artificial intelligence in the future.
