Strong earthquake in Myanmar: 694 people died, many cities were destroyed

A powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.7 that struck Myanmar resulted in the deaths of 694 people, with 1,670 injured, according to TASS agency citing sources from Agence France-Presse.

Destruction across the entire country

According to local authorities, the earthquake that occurred on March 28 caused significant destruction throughout the country. Witnesses reported that many residential buildings, administrative structures, and hospitals collapsed in four regions.

The epicenter of the earthquake is located near the city of Mandalay. The tremors led to the collapse of a bridge over the Irrawaddy River, as well as partial destruction of the historic Mandalay Palace. Hundreds of people have been hospitalized, and a state of emergency has been declared in the country.

State of emergency declared in six regions

Officials declared a state of emergency in six regions:

- Sikkim,
- Mandalay,
- Pegu,
- Mague,
- Eastern Shan State,
- Capital Naypyidaw.

The Prime Minister of Myanmar, General Min Aung Hlaing, called on the international community to provide assistance.

Rescue operations are currently ongoing. Officials are emphasizing that the number of casualties may increase.
