Parkinson can now be diagnosed in living patients: A new breakthrough in medicine from Chinese scientists
Parkinson's disease, one of the severe and late-diagnosed illnesses affecting the brain, is considered an extremely serious health issue. Millions of people around the world live with it, and currently, there is no complete cure for this disease.

Today, however, there is a promising scientific breakthrough — researchers from Fudan University and Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine have succeeded in developing special substances that allow for the early detection of Parkinson's and similar brain diseases.

This work was published in the journal Genomic Psychiatry and has been received with great interest by the global medical community.

Previously only detectable after death

In Parkinson's disease, a specific harmful protein — α-synuclein accumulates in the brain. This substance affects nerve cells, disrupting their function.

Previously, this protein could only be detected after the patient had passed away. This made early diagnosis and effective treatment almost impossible.

Now, for the first time, it is possible to analyze in a living brain

Based on the new technology developed by Chinese scientists, it will be possible to detect the accumulation of α-synuclein in the brain while the patient is alive. For this, a special substance is injected into the body, and changes in the brain are observed through PET scanning (positron emission tomography).

“This is a real scientific achievement. For the first time, we have been able to directly observe the pathology in the brain while the patient is still alive,” says leading specialist Fang Xie from Huashan Hospital.

[18F]C05-05 — a new era in Parkinson's diagnosis

One of the developed substances — [18F]C05-05 — has already been tested on patients with symptoms of Parkinson's and dementia, showing successful results.

This substance accumulates in areas of the brain where α-synuclein is highly concentrated and demonstrated a direct correlation with the severity of symptoms.

Another substance helps differentiate other diseases

Another substance in the same direction — [18F]ACI-12589 — is proving useful in diagnosing another brain disease — multiple system atrophy. It allows for accurate differentiation of this disease despite symptoms similar to Parkinson's.

The main goal of the scientific team: to detect the disease before it reaches an irreversible stage

“If we can identify Parkinson's disease and similar neurodegenerative disorders before the ruthless processes begin, it will change the fate of millions of people,” says research leader Dr. Infan He.

In conclusion...

This technology could be another revolutionary step for medicine. Detecting Parkinson's and similar diseases before symptoms worsen allows for the protection of the brain and the preservation of quality of life.

What do you think — will this scientific breakthrough in medicine open the door to hope for all humanity?
