Responsibility is established for changing the mileage of a vehicle

In Uzbekistan, new legal measures are being introduced to combat fraud in the automobile market and protect consumer rights. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
Now, tampering with a vehicle’s mileage—specifically, reducing the odometer reading—will result in strict liability. The draft law establishing this procedure has been approved and will soon come into force.
According to this document, sellers who conceal a vehicle’s actual mileage, alter the instrument readings, or completely replace the device without informing the buyer will be held administratively liable. Such actions were previously carried out to artificially inflate the vehicle’s price and mislead buyers about its technical condition.
These actions will now be prohibited by law, and penalties will be imposed on offenders. Detected violations will be thoroughly investigated by internal affairs authorities, and collected documents will be forwarded to court for a final decision.
In determining mileage tampering, the conclusion of a specialized expert examination will serve as the primary evidence. The new provision being introduced into the Code of Administrative Liability is specifically aimed at protecting consumers from deception.
These rules will primarily be applied based on consumer complaints. If a citizen discovers that the mileage of a purchased vehicle has been falsified, they will have the right to file a complaint with the relevant authorities.
This innovation will help ensure transparency in the automobile market and increase seller accountability. Furthermore, the measure will serve as an important step toward creating a safe and fair trading environment in the bilateral market.
