Maxim Mitrofanov, president of the Russian Football Union, expressed his thoughts on the national team's possibility of playing matches on neutral grounds. This was reported by Euro-football.ru.
According to him, considering such options during the process of returning to official competitions may be appropriate and reasonable. Mitrofanov's words were quoted by the Sport-Express publication.
It should be noted that Russian national teams and clubs have been banned from international competitions by the decisions of FIFA and UEFA. This ban has been in effect since February 2022.
Due to the restrictions, the Russian national team can only hold friendly matches. In their last game, Valery Karpin's team defeated the Belarus national team 4:1.
Thus, playing on neutral grounds is being considered as an alternative option. This would allow the national team to continue its activities on the international stage.
