Another batch of weapons lost after the unrest in Kazakhstan in January 2022 has been found. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to the National Security Committee, during search operations conducted in 12 regions of the country in September, more than 60 weapons and over four thousand rounds of ammunition were seized. Searches were carried out in the cities of Almaty and Shymkent, as well as in Atyrau, Zhambyl, Karaganda, Kyzylorda, Turkistan, West Kazakhstan, and Almaty regions, and in the Ulutau, Zhetysu, and Abai districts.
The recovered weapons include three Kalashnikov assault rifles, sixteen pistols, forty-three hunting rifles, four grenades, and thousands of rounds of ammunition. Additionally, individuals who stole about ten weapons in January 2022 were identified, but the committee did not provide information about the exact origin or circumstances under which the recovered weapons were lost.
Over the past three years, law enforcement agencies have periodically recovered some of the weapons and ammunition lost during the "Bloody January" events. For example, in April 2023, the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported seizing several hundred weapons, although it could not prove that all of them were stolen from stores during the unrest.
According to official data, since 2022, the National Security Committee has seized a total of 608 weapons. At the same time, the Ministry of Internal Affairs previously stated that the fate of more than 1,700 weapons remains unknown.
It is worth recalling that in January 2022, large-scale protests took place in Almaty and other cities due to the increase in the price of liquefied gas. In Almaty, these protests escalated into unrest involving armed individuals, leading to violent clashes between protesters and security forces.
According to official data, 238 people died during those days.
