Antoniu Joze Seguru was elected president in Portugal

The second round of the presidential election in Portugal has concluded. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
In this election, the Socialist Party candidate António José Seguro won with a clear advantage over his rival, the right-wing Chega party leader André Ventura. According to the results announced by the state broadcaster RTP on the night of February 9, 63-year-old Seguro received 66.8% of the votes, while 43-year-old Ventura was limited to 33.2%.
André Ventura acknowledged his defeat and wished Seguro a successful presidential term. At the same time, he emphasized that his party will continue to fight for political changes.
Seguro was congratulated on his victory by the leader of the Social Democratic Party and Prime Minister Luís Montenegro. This congratulation indicates that the paths for future cooperation between the new president and the government remain open.
The incumbent president Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is scheduled to hand over his office to António José Seguro on March 9. Thus, a representative of the Socialist Party will occupy the head of state position for the first time since 2006.
At that time, the socialist Jorge Sampaio had completed his second term. The first round of this election was held on January 18, in which no candidate was able to secure more than 50% of the votes.
This situation reflects political division and instability in the country. The frequent holding of parliamentary elections in recent years is also a sign of this political situation.
Although the president's powers in Portugal are mainly symbolic, in some cases he has the right to dissolve parliament or veto laws. The incumbent president Rebelo de Sousa has used these powers several times in recent years.
Now, António José Seguro is expected to carry out important tasks such as ensuring political stability and strengthening trust among state institutions as president. His activity will be assessed through decisions made after March 9.
