The British company Tropic Biotechnology has created a variety of bananas that do not darken for up to 12 hours after being peeled. This was reported by The Guardian.
Advantages of the new banana variety
The new variety of bananas darkens 30 percent slower than other bananas for a day after being peeled. Scientists achieved this result by disabling the gene responsible for the production of the polyphenol oxidase enzyme, which causes the fruit to darken. This technology has previously been used to modify apples, tomatoes, and mushrooms.
Another important aspect of the new banana variety is that it is not genetically modified (non-GMO). Scientists carried out this development by regulating the activity of existing genes without adding foreign DNA.
In which countries will the new variety be sold?
Currently, the USA, Canada, Colombia, Honduras, and the Philippines have allowed the new banana variety to be sold. This product is expected to enter other markets in the near future.
Impact of the banana industry on ecology
Bananas are one of the most popular fruits in the world, and due to their short shelf life, nearly half of the product ends up as waste. The new development helps reduce waste by preventing the fruit from spoiling quickly and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The introduction of the new banana variety to the market not only offers consumers a higher quality and longer-lasting product but also creates new opportunities for the food industry. This development may also be applied to other fruits in the future.
