Since Donald Trump took office as the President of the USA, the country's international standing has significantly decreased. This was reported by Politico based on the results of the "Democracy Perception Index" (DPI) conducted in 2025.
This research involved over 110,000 people from more than 100 countries, who assessed how they perceive democracy, global politics, the geopolitical situation, and the influence of leading states.
According to the survey results, a majority of the world's population expressed negative views about the USA. Notably, there has been a sharp increase in negative attitudes towards the USA among the populations of European Union countries.
Anders Fog Rasmussen, former NATO Secretary General and one of the authors of the research, specifically noted that he is not surprised by the situation:
“The sharp decline in perceptions of the United States around the world is not an unexpected event. In recent years, the USA's foreign policy, diplomatic relations, and positions in international agreements have raised many questions in other countries,” says Rasmussen.
Another interesting finding of the research is that China has surpassed the USA in global reputation for the first time. According to respondents, the People's Republic of China is beginning to be recognized as a reliable partner and a state that pursues a stable policy in international relations.
At the same time, Russia continues to strengthen its international position. 32 percent of the research participants rated President Vladimir Putin's policies positively. It is worth noting that this figure is comparable to the level of support for Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
In this context, only 27 percent of respondents rated Donald Trump's policies positively, further confirming the decline in the reputation of the USA's leader.
According to international politics experts, the decline in the USA's reputation is attributed to Trump's sharp statements in foreign policy, withdrawal from several international agreements, and contradictory positions in diplomatic communications.
