A new temporary constitution has been signed in Syria
The interim president of Syria, Ahmad ash-Shar’a, signed the country's temporary constitution, which is intended for a period of five years. This step represents an important milestone for political changes and new state governance in Syria. The new constitution expresses a strong position against the regime of former president Bashar al-Assad. According to it, Assad's rise to power and governance is recognized as a crime. At the beginning of December 2024, the rebel group "Hay’at Tahrir ash-Sham" (HTS) overthrew president Bashar al-Assad, who had been in power for over 50 years in Syria. On January 29, 2025, Ahmad ash-Shar’a accepted the governance of the country and was tasked with developing a new draft constitution.
Key principles of the constitution
One of the important innovations is that the new constitution retains the provisions that the head of state must be a Muslim and that Islamic law is supreme. This establishes the main principle of the renewed legal system in the country. Additionally, provisions that strengthen freedom of speech and the media should also be noted.
The constitution places great emphasis on maintaining the balance between the legislative, executive, and judicial powers of the state. This, in turn, ensures the stability of the legal system and the orderly functioning of state organs. At the same time, the document emphasizes that citizens are guaranteed equal rights and obligations before the law, regardless of their race, religion, gender, or lineage.
Special provisions regarding the army and weapons
The new constitution also pays special attention to the army. It stipulates that the army is a professional national institution and that its activities must be in accordance with the law. Furthermore, special provisions have been included regarding the prohibition of uncontrolled weapons. This envisions bringing the country's security system fully under state control.
