Russia tested the new "Geran-5" drone in Ukraine

At the beginning of 2026, a new type of dangerous weapon – the "Geran-5" drone – was used for the first time in the skies over Ukraine. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, the Russian army tested this drone as a strike weapon for the first time. The "Geran-5" differs from previous models in size and technical capabilities.
According to intelligence reports, the drone is approximately 6 meters long, with a wingspan of 5.5 meters. Its combat payload weighs 90 kilograms and is capable of destroying targets at a distance of 1000 kilometers.
The device is equipped with the "Kometa" navigation system, a Raspberry microcomputer, and 3G/4G modems. The drone moves using a Telefly jet engine.
Experts believe that the "Geran-5" is not an independent Russian development. It is structurally similar to Iran's "Karrar" drone.
Russian engineers have simplified the production process by integrating this model with other samples from the "Geran" series. The Russian military command is exploring ways to make the use of the drone more effective.
In particular, the possibilities of launching the "Geran-5" from the Su-25 aircraft and equipping it with "air-to-air" missiles are being considered. These methods could extend the drone's flight range and reduce costs.
International experts emphasize that Russia continues its strategy of wearing down Ukraine's air defense systems using inexpensive drones. While the "Geran-2" drone costs about 60 thousand dollars, the new models are even cheaper.
This is being done to force Ukraine to expend expensive anti-aircraft missiles against cheap drones. Currently, Ukrainian intelligence is studying the captured drone samples.
A detailed report on the drone's technical structure and capabilities is expected to be presented soon. The emergence of new drones is clearly a serious test for Ukraine's air defense system.
