Europe criticized TikTok design: warned about dangerous habits

The European Commission criticized certain design elements of the TikTok platform, emphasizing that they may reinforce addictive-like behaviors among users, especially children and teenagers. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to the Commission, mechanisms such as the endless scroll on TikTok, automatic video playback, push notifications, and personalized recommendations encourage people to stay on the platform longer. This can negatively affect the psychological development of the younger generation.
The Commission demands that platforms comply with rules to identify risks in advance and reduce them. Experts like Xenna Virkkunen stressed the need to take social media addiction seriously, noting that these rules should not remain only on paper but must be effectively implemented.
TikTok currently has the opportunity to defend its position and propose measures to reduce risks. However, if violations of the rules are found, the company may face heavy fines and may be required to change the platform's design.
For example, changes such as limiting the endless scroll or strengthening break mechanisms might be introduced. This process could become a significant turning point for social networks.
From now on, platforms will need to focus not only on keeping users engaged for longer but also on ensuring their well-being. This trend is expected to strengthen in the coming years.
