During the general debates held on November 26, the 2026 budget draft was reviewed, but the main focus was on aid to Ukraine and relations with Russia. This issue sparked political disputes.
The discussions began with a speech by Alice Weidel, leader of the opposition party "Alternative for Germany" (AfD). She criticized Chancellor Friedrich Merz and emphasized that there is a possibility to achieve peace because of Donald Trump.
Weidel sharply condemned financial aid to Ukraine and the corruption situation in Kyiv. Party representatives proposed restoring the purchase of cheap gas and oil from Russia.
The AfD leadership stressed that Ukraine cannot be called Germany's "seventeenth federal state." Chancellor Friedrich Merz, on the other hand, described the Russia-Ukraine war as a matter of preserving peace and freedom in Europe.
He emphasized that surrendering to stop the war is unacceptable. According to Merz, sustainable peace should not be achieved without the consent of Ukraine and European countries.
At the same time, he promised to continue providing comprehensive support to Kyiv. The leader of the "Greens" party, Britta Haßelmann, in her speech, drew attention to the humanitarian tragedies in Ukraine.
She proposed freezing Russian assets and using them for Ukraine's needs. However, this issue has not been resolved due to opposition from Belgium.
Haßelmann also noted that stopping aid to Ukraine could prolong the war. During the debates, various political forces emphasized their positions and engaged in sharp discussions about whether Germany should continue assisting Ukraine or explore other approaches on this matter.
